You want to redesign your garden or patio and are looking for a good idea requiring relatively little maintenance? In this case, a rock garden is exactly what need you. Be it rustic, Mediterranean or whimsical, a rock garden attracts the eye. It is possible to well highlight a garden of stones on a surface of 6 to 15 square meters. The more space you have available, the better it is.
Choose the stones
You are first going to need quality stones. There are many available in the market, of different shapes and colors, such as limestone, granite or basalt. They are suitable for a rock garden. In larger gardens, a few blocks bring the most beautiful effect. The paths passing through a garden of stones are also very beautiful. There is no limit in the creation of a rock garden. However, we recommend that you use pebbles of the same kind and the same shape so that the garden does not give the impression of being too restless.
The kind of stone that you choose and shape (round or square) are questions of taste.
Choose your plants
A garden of stones also requires appropriate plants. The variety of plants is very wide and goes from perennial plants (Aubrietes, alpine asters and houseleek) to plants with tubers and onions (wild tulips, narcissus and crocus) passing through shrubs (blue lavender and thyme), to name a few.
Conifers that grow slowly, called dwarf conifers, also enrich a rock garden. When choosing plants, consider that some plants like limestone, others do not. The choice of plants must therefore be carried out only after choosing the stones.
If you are unsure about the plants, try to talk to experts in a garden or in a garden centre.
